As students across the country head back to school, fall sports are in full swing at both the college and high school levels. With exciting matchups and fierce competition, athletes are giving it their all on the field, court, and track. Starting off with college sports, the University of California, Berkeley’s football team took down the University of Southern California with a 24-17 victory. The Golden Bears’ defense shined, holding USC’s offense to only 17 points and forcing two turnovers. This win puts Cal at 3-0 for the season, making them a team to watch as the season progresses.
In women’s soccer, the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill continued their dominance with a 4-0 win over Wake Forest University. The Tar Heels, who are currently ranked number one in the nation, have yet to lose a game this season and are proving to be a formidable force on the field.
Moving on to high school sports, the WAGM Sports team reported on some exciting matchups this past week. In boys’ soccer, Caribou High School defeated Fort Kent Community High School with a score of 3-2. It was a tight game until the end, with Caribou scoring the game-winning goal in the final minutes. On the girls’ side, Houlton High School took down Presque Isle High School with a 2-0 victory. Both teams showed strong defensive performances, but Houlton’s offense was able to find the back of the net twice for the win.
In cross country, the Presque Isle boys’ team dominated their home course, winning the Aroostook League Championship with a score of 26 points. On the girls’ side, Caribou High School took home the title with a score of 30 points. Both teams will now advance to the state championships and have the potential to make a strong showing.
It’s not just on the field where athletes are excelling. In golf, the Caribou High School girls’ team won the Aroostook League Championship, while the Houlton High School boys’ team took home the title for the boys.
